Overview

CHEE22 is a chess-inspired game for PlayStation 5, influenced by the simplicity and creativity of Balatro. It reimagines the classic rules of chess with a deliberately small scope, so the team could reach a higher level of polish.

It runs on Tyro Engine, the custom C++20 engine I built on the PlayStation 5 rendering API and PSSL for the game. This was my first project on a PS5 development kit, and an opportunity to work within the constraints of console hardware.

Tyro Engine

  • A deferred rendering pipeline with Blinn–Phong illumination.
  • Ambient, point, spot, and directional lights.
  • A modular post-processing system.
  • A resource manager that loads 3D models and GNF textures.

CHEE22

The game was developed from scratch by five programmers and a designer. Alongside the engine, I implemented the post-processing, the UI framework, and the game-state manager that controls the flow from menus to gameplay.

Team: Jorge Alemany, Jaime Garrido, Juan Avilés, Nacho Avilés, and me (programming) · Duncan Cummings (design).
