Understanding every stage of the frame
Mutant Engine is a solo C++20 and OpenGL 4.6 project developed for the Graphic Engines course at ESAT, between September 2023 and July 2024. Building an engine from scratch gave me practical experience with the relationship between engine architecture, GPU workloads, and visual quality.
Rendering
- Forward and deferred rendering pipelines.
- Multi-draw indirect, bindless textures, shader storage buffer objects, and vertex pulling.
- Compute and geometry shaders.
- Screen-space global illumination (SSGI) and ambient occlusion (SSAO).
Engine architecture
An entity-component system handles scene objects, a templated resource manager handles assets, and a multithreaded job system supports parallel processing. The project uses Conan for dependency management.
Establishing a clear rendering pipeline and managing GPU commands were central challenges. Taking the project from concept to completion deepened my understanding of resource lifetimes, rendering techniques, and engine structure.
